Watering Others…

Even from a very young age, Jayvon has always been taller and bigger than his peers. I mean, he was wearing clothes meants for a 12-month old… at 6-months.

Now, he still looks older than his 25-months, and given his cheeky character, we were never really concerned about him being bullied in school.

If anything, it is the opposite.

Gosh… and take a look at these two photos!

His poor classmates!

Haha… but you gotta admit, these are really funny shots.

Maybe it is a “boy” thing, cos his classmate does the same thing too! Haha!

15

You know for sure, that water play time is a popular time for the children!!!

P.S. Err… Please don’t ask me why Jay isn’t in his swimwear… I thought waterplay’s only on Monday… isn’t it? Isn’t it? Oops…

CHC’s New Building!

Gosh, Pastor Kong never ceases to amaze me. In spite of a uber-hectic travelling schedule, he has come up with a list of Frequently Asked Questions for the new church building we will be having.

Yes! Our NEW church building!

Words cannot state how excited I am, and I am sure as is the case with the other 27,000 members of the church, as we await with bated breath for the revelation next weekend… Exactly WHERE will our new church building be? After years of hopping on cabs and spending literally hours travelling to the extreme ends of the island to get to church, I am PUMPED to get into our new place!

Check out Pastor’s blog and his answers to those FAQs…

My Outlet…

Nic thinks I am mad.

I half-think he may be right, after all.

The month of March is like… crazy-busy for me.

3548219434_a9fa0d2d7e

This Sunday is Vision Weekend, next Sunday is AGM. Following that, I have my ISO audit coming up month-end.

Above and beyond that, there’s still my “regular” work and preparation for FOP in July this year.

No, I’m not going mad over the work. Not yet, anyway.

But he thinks I am mad for BLOGGING every night! Hahaha! And not just this blog, but Jay’s blog as well.

Well, it is my outlet.

Keeps me from kicking and screaming…

And it helps that blogging is pretty enjoyable to me.

I hope to *fingers crossed* keep up a daily blog post for both these blogs. Will try… Words don’t run out. Maybe just time. Hahaha!

His Many Faces

I couldn’t resist putting together this photo montage…
All these shots took place on the same day – Day 2 of Chinese New Year (which explains the festive red garb!)…
Check out his many facial expressions!

Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden

After hearing so much about the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden, I was really looking forward to going over there with Jayvon.

Taking advantage of the long holiday from Chinese New Year, Nic & I brought Jayvon on the 3rd day of CNY. Being a garden, there were loads of greens and beautiful flowers and fruits, and loads of things to entertain young minds.

Even from the entrance, we knew we would be in for a treat! Check out this gorgeous “tree” sculpture…

And inside, even more greens and beautiful flowers greeted us. Here’s my first stab at garden photography… Haha!

With all that gorgeous flora in the place, we wanted to expose Jayvon to the wonders of nature. The beauty of it. Of the colours and the smells. Of the grass and the flowers.

Jayvon had other ideas.

IMG_5560

He was introduced to nature, all right.

The wonders of the dirt!

Touching it, grabbing it by the fistful, and then throwing it up into the air.

What a typical boy! Haha!

He had loads of fun, especially in the mini water play area. Check out more photos in his own blog.

The Children’s Garden is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily(closed on Mondays except for public holidays), and admission is free!

Quick Tip for Parents: Be sure to dress your kid up in some cool clothes, and don’t forget an extra change of clothes for their water play! The Garden is meant for kids up till 12 years old, and there are various educational and fun breakout areas for them.

Going Bananas~!

To me, bananas are my favourite fruits. I mean, I love durians and mangoes and grapes… But nothing beats bananas!

And I’m so glad Jayvon too loves his yellows! :)

Check out these photos…
Whereas his classmates get distracted look up to see the teacher, his eyes NEVER leave that banana!

B.U.S.Y

Many things have happened.

Well, just that one thing, really.

Many ask me if I am okay.

You obviously underestimate me.

My ability to forget, I mean.

That’s always the first step to letting it go.

But i guess it really also helped that I was-am-and-will-be super busy from now till March 7, 2010.

All that work has helped to distract me.

And I am so easily distracted. Haha!

Life goes on, God is good.

Outdoors with Jason Mraz

Just saw this on youtube! One of my favourite singers, in one of Jay’s favourite TV shows! The best of both worlds… :)

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

This Chinese New Year, as Jay is now 2 years old, he enjoyed himself so much! He even learnt how to … err… smile at the camera.

IMG_5395

After searching high and low, I managed to snag this white cotton top for Jay. Check out the awesome detailing!

And his recent shoe buy – black highcut Converse shoes!

By the end of the afternoon, and three house visitations later, this was the sight as we made our way back to my in-law’s house for lunch…

He was totally knocked out for a good two hours! All in all, it was a good time with the family!

This Little Prayer Of Mine

I received a pleasant surprise in the mail the other day…

IMG_5381

A personally autographed copy of the book, “The Little Prayer of Mine” by Anthony DeStefano.

IMG_5382

What a cool surprise!

I usually try to read to Jay before he sleeps each night, and just last night, he was in a pretty clingy mood, after a long day in school and probably missing his mommy a great deal.

So I whipped out this book, and he was at once enthralled with the gorgeous illustrations, and beautiful prose. It’s probably the first time I’ve read any sort of poetry to him!

IMG_5383

See the teddy bear? Jay quickly lost his heart to that little Bear-Bear too!

All in all, it was a great bedtime book for us both! It reminds me – simple faith pleases God!

Reunion Dinner Part 1

It’s Chinese New Year, and it’s my favourite time of the year… It speaks of rest (4 full days of bumming around till Wednesday! Yippee!), fellowship with close family and friends, and most importantly… GOOD FOOD!

Last night, my family had our reunion dinner – and we had yummy steamboat!

First off, there was the traditional Yusheng (or literally raw fish). With the traditional shouts of Chinese idioms (my family’s Chinese’s all pretty limited, I realise, haha!) and the usual toss-up of the ingredients, it was one messy, but very yummy, dish!

IMG_5364

And the main dish itself?

IMG_5372

With the most important ingredient … Pork shabu-shabu!

IMG_5377

Looking forward to more feasting!

RANDOM PARENTING QUESTIONS

I’m no parenting guru… haha! But I guess it is always good for us to hear and learn from another person. Here’re some questions I’ve been asked by friends, cell members and colleagues.

What is your own personal parenting style?

Nic & I believe in a parenting style that is both warm and authoritarian. Warm – spending lots of quality time with Jay, lots of words of affirmation, hugs and kisses. Almost every day, after work and after dinner, I make the effort to spend some time with Jay alone, bringing him to run wild read books at Borders or enjoy a cup of yoghurt together. Authoritarian – spanking and disciplining him when he gets out of hand.

We constantly act as moderators to his emotions, and when it seems like he is working up a temper or a tantrum, we quickly step in so that he will not lose his temper, and can learn to control it better. This is Nic’s pet phrase nowadays – moderate.

My child is xx months old now. Should/Can I start disciplining him/her now?

One word: Yeah.

The first harsh tone Nic took with Jay… was when Jay was only 2 months old. No, it wasn’t a scolding, but a serious and deep “Don’t do that” to this little baby. The first smack Jay received (albeit he hardly felt it with those diapers cushioning his buttocks) was when he was 5 months old.

How to discipline kids?

Much has been written on this topic.

Well, personally, one thing I learnt very quickly as a parent is to not get overly emotional when disciplining Jay. Trying to out-shout your child doesn’t work well. Trying to out-scream him is a bad idea too. Having too heavy a hand when disciplining is also a no-no. Over-harsh scolding or being personal in your words are also not useful and in fact, detrimental to the child’s self-esteem.

Praise in public. Discipline in private.

Many of my good friends use “Mr. Spoon” as a tool of punishment.

Nic feels a smack on Jay’s butt with his palm works as fine.

I wanted to get a “Mr. Spoon” too, initially. But cos I have a lot of other people living in the same household, I am not keen on the idea of another person brandishing that wooden spoon to get a reaction from Jay, apart from Nic and I, and so I decided not to. Haha!

And the flipside of discipline?

Asian culture is such that it is big on humility, but sometimes takes this to the extreme. It is typical to find parents (especially from the older generations) rubbishing their kids’ accomplishments in the misguided efforts to “spur” them on to greater heights and not rest on their laurels. While there is nothing wrong in doing such a thing, the truth is kids can grow up with a pretty inferior outlook on life, after being constantly told that they are never good “enough”.

So, be extravagant in your praise of your child. Be over the top with it! When he or she is a great kid, be sure to tell them. If the only response they get from you is when they are misbehaving, you can be sure that is what they will do when they try to seek your attention.

What is secure attachment?

This was a word and a concept I first learnt from Nic, and the more I read up on it and the more I see it “lived out” real-life, not just in Jay but in the other people around as well, the more I am a convert and a believer. Haha!

You can read it greater detail here.

NEEDING SOME SNOOZING

I kinda feel like I went through the clothes dryer, and out I pop! All wrung dry!

What a tiring, tiring week.

With Jay’s first week in school, it also means that Mommy has to re-adjust her own schedule.

It means reworking my hours such that I now end at 4.30 p.m. on the days that Jay goes to school, so that I can pick him up by 5 p.m. (Yippee!)

It means giving up my ‘free’ Mondays to make my facial/pedicure/manicure appointments, cos now I need to work on Mondays to clock in the hours. (Sigh…)

It means setting my alarm clock at 7 a.m. each morning to prepare both Jay and myself for school/work! (Double sigh…)

The last time I had to wake at such an unearthly hour, when the sky was still dark out… was when I was back in my Junior College days!

g…r…o…a…n…

God is the strength of my heart!

First 2 Days in Little Big

Little Big teachers maintain an online photo storage account, and they would upload photos of the kids on a daily basis.

While I cannot be there with Jay, it is so exciting to see the photos of him playing and interacting with his fellow Pre-Nursery friends!

Here’s the shots from Day 1:

20100201 - 1

Hmm… Ain’t this what is used to steam HongKong dim sums?

20100201 - 2

Gunny Sack fun!

And see? I do recall Ms. Liyun reminding me to bring Jay’s swimwear. *cough* But I forgot. So he had his water play time… fully clothed.

3

But then his pants got too cumbersome, so off it went and he sat bare-backside and played with water. Haha!

6

Learning through play!

4

5

As you can see, he loves to splash and play around in the pool! So I think this was a great contributing factor to his “perfect” first day in school.

And more photos from Day 2 (Feb 3, 2010):

20100203-3

I haven’t got any PlayDoh set for Jay at home, so this is his first time playing with this!

20100203-4

Don’t you like how everything looks so nice and cheery?

20100203 - 1

Hmm… very strange ball.

20100203 - 2

Ms. Liyun, his Pre-Nursery teacher. And the cutest thing was that all three students wore the same colour polo uniform today!

Little Big has polo tees in about 5 to 6 different bright colours, and each child is given three sets to rotate, and they are allowed to wear their own bottoms to school.

All in all, I am really glad I started preschool at Little Big for Jay. With the lessons and playtime, it stimulates him and engages him, and looking at these photos and the verbal reports given by his teachers, I am also sure he is having a rockin’ time in school!

First Day In School!

In the week running up to Jay’s first day in school…

Mommy was excited…

Nervous…

Anticipating…

Busy preparing…

                               Anxious…

                    Happy…

And did I mention anxious yet?

Oh gosh. On one hand, I knew he would have a blast, with Little Big’s facilities and fun and great and loving teachers…

On the other hand… how would he adjust? Would he scream and cry? Would he be able to eat? Sleep? …

And today, Feb 1, 2010 officially marks Jay’s first day in school.

The first day he will be spending a great part of the day away from both Mommy and my domestic helper…

He’s all grown up!

Despite all my anxieties, I am so proud of Jayvon… He stepped into the school, and was all smiley and responded pretty well to the teachers. He readily took Ms. Liyun’s hand and went into the classroom and made himself comfortable by playing with the toys displayed. With the brightly coloured environment, it is quite similar in concept to Suntec Nursery, which I think helps to make it easier for him to relate to the place.

I can’t wait to pick him up at 5 p.m. and hear all about his day!
