C-Nai Hong Kong Cafe

One of my favourite restaurants is C-Nai at East Coast Parkway.

IMG_1878

We had a yummy dinner, and as usual, the food didn’t disappoint!

IMG_1909

Nic’s ham and chicken spaghetti. When it came, the plate was full. But after our foray at the beach, we were all famished, and I didn’t bother whipping out the camera earlier! Haha! Jay absolutely loves spaghetti!

IMG_1910

A must-order every time I go to C-Nai. Their deep fried squid is absolutely yummy. And can you believe it, this is also Jay’s fave side dish!

IMG_1911

My yummy Shanghai Pork Chop rice. Yum!

IMG_1913

I ordered this char siew noodle for Jay, but it came so late, and he had already filled his tummy with Daddy’s yummy spaghetti.

My good friend’s blog

Wenling is not just my close friend, and a good-looker…

She is also Mrs. Singapore – Queen of Hope 2010!

How totally cool is that, ya?

Check out her blog!

Beach-ing fun!

A balmy Sunday evening.

“Despicable Me” was sold out.

Next best alternative…

East Coast beach!

IMG_1827

And this time round, “Jay brought Daddy” along too!

IMG_1828

“Give me the pail, Daddy.”

“I need more water, Daddy,”

“Don’t touch my water, Daddy.”

IMG_1849

The lack of sunlight made this a poorer photo opp than the last beach outing we had.

IMG_1868

But Jay still had loads of fun in the sand.

Why an iPad is a parenting essential

IMG00237-20100616-2257

Singapore launched its official iPad on Friday!

Were you in the iQueue?

Well, if you are a parent, here are my thoughts on why the iPad is a parenting God-sent!

It’s all about the apps. Obviously.

One full page on my iPad is reserved for Jay. Of course, I love the free applications, but he has loads of fun with the paid ones too. Here’s some of Jay’s all-time favourite apps.

image

Talking Carl. Can’t go wrong with the red monster who repeats your every word in a singularly high-pitched tone.

image

Sleeping Carl. Same Carl. But forever sleeping and snoring. Thankfully this was the free app, so it keeps Jay entertained for a minute or so.

image

Animals’ Matching. Playing the matching game with cute animal cards and adorable graphics. I think it is fun and educational! 3 different difficulty levels, so this should keep Jay entertained for a while.

image

Find Me! From the same developers are AniMatching. Cute matching game. Also has the 3 difficulty levels.

photo

ClickySticky. Gosh this $1.99 app is Jay’s favourite! It allows him to “create” different photos with stickers that he can drag into the background. With the accompanying music and noises, he loves this! The photo above was what he did AND managed to save into the photos folder of my iPad. How tech-savvy is that? Haha!

image

FirstWords. One of the first few apps we bought, and still one of Jay’s favourite. Many apps in this category, but Jay loves FirstWords: Animals best.

image

The Cat In The Hat. I dunno what came over me. I bought this $3.99 app. But Jay adores this e-book, especially hearing the story read out loud.

But if you think spending $3.99 is bad… Stop reading now please.

image

Toy Story 3. A whooping US$8.99 app. THANKFULLY Jay adores this app. And apart from having the story read out to him, there’re also loads of music and games for him. Even this “painting” game. Check out his creation…

Hahaha!

Well, if you can afford this, your kid will adore this fun toy. The huge screen and clear graphics also make for a good time.

I imagine in a few year’s time, students could simply bring the iPad to school and click on apps to “open up” their textbooks!

The entry of Mr. Cane

“Spare the rod and spoil the child.”

Nic bought a “Mr. Cane” about 3 weeks back, after a nasty meltdown Jay had at a Crystal Jade restaurant where we were having our dinner. Last night was the first time it was actually in action. Jay was behaving wildly, and was kicking and biting Nic, despite being told not to numerous times. So Jay received several taps on his palm with the thin rattan cane.

But kids are amazingly resilient. And they know when they are wrong. Before each tap on the palm, Nic would explain to Jay the reason why he would be receiving it.

At the final tap, Jay turned to Nic and said, “One more, Daddy?”

Nic: “No need. I am finished, Jay.”

Jay: “Sorry daddy.”

Cue Daddy’s melted heart.

After that, I put Jay to bed, and asked him about his first encounter with Mr. Cane.

This is Jay’s version (about word for word, as much as I can remember).

“Daddy talked and talked to me. And then Jayvon said, Sorry Daddy. And then Daddy talked finish already. And then he put Mr. Cane back.”

Hahaha! He is such a gem.

Was it painful? I doubt it. If it were, Jay would have whined to me.

But it served as a deterrent, to show him his actions will have consequences. I never thought I would be a discipline-advocate, but these past few months have made me realize no matter how cute or smart Jay is, discipline is something rather lacking in his life, and in order for him to not morph into a monster, he would need to appreciate the effects of action-consequence.

I know there are a few trains of thoughts on this subject of discipline, and believe me, I have tried time-outs and removal of privileges, but I guess boys may need a stronger guiding hand? Honestly, I am one of the rare few in my own generation that have never been caned. Neither has my younger sis (can’t speak for my older ones, but not in my memory). But that is cos that look from our father was enough to silence us into submission. Maybe us being all pretty submissive as girls. But raising up boys? And raising them up to be godly men? More and more, I appreciate that discipline is a must.

So be it you believe in using the cane or if say other methods work for you, do it with love, with grace, but most importantly – just do it! While Jay got his first encounter with Mr. Cane only yesterday (at 2.5 years old), we have always (since he was about 5 months) been moderating his behaviour and outbursts. It would be either a firmer smack on the buttocks, a frown or a lowly-spoken word, but it would all communicate our disapproval at where his behaviour was going to be headed.

With kids, men and women migrate to Jupiter

This would be the title of my new book.

If I ever write a book, that is.

Which I hardly see happening anytime in this lifetime.

But hey, if I did, I’d probably write this one.

Unless of course, there is already a book with this title out there?l

Is there?

I wouldn’t know.

Cos I’ve not stepped into the NON-children’s section of a bookstore for, well, 3 years.

But I haven’t read any non-fiction book in ages.

Unless the Twilight series is considered?

But anyhow, seeing how I hardly read nowadays, it is little wonder I won’t be writing any book soon.

Obviously, my soon-to-be-written-once-I-get-my-butt-to-it book is a pun on that famous book.

Don’t tell me you don’t get it.

It’s either I don’t tell a pun like I used to (oh so very well, I might add).

Or you are a worse-off bookstore noob than I.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.

Obviously.

But see, once a man and a woman marries, and all that initial Mars-Venus issues are resolved, there comes Junior.

Or Juniors, for some.

And then man and woman are kidnapped migrate to a brand new land.

I bring you… Jupiter.

Where the rules are totally different.

And sleep deprivation marks your day.

A wise parent once told me,

“You never know how much you don’t need to sleep,

till you have to wake up five times a night,

and get to work early in the morning.”

There is a correlation.

Between the number of times you have to wake up in the middle of the night to a screaming/crying/hungry child.

And the number of times you press that snooze button on that alarm in the morning.

It’s almost scientific.

Sure there are times when you may get up three times in the night and yet in the morning feel totally refreshed.

But other mornings where a bad night’s sleep or an ill child hits you worse than your worst hangover.

Not that I even remember how a hangover feels like.

But sleep deprivation? That wooziness and lightheaded-ness is as close as we can get.

Killing me softly with his words

I am really grateful Jay is able to articulate so well.

He can tell us when he is not well. Just last week, he was unwell, and told his daddy that “someone hit my head”… and he was describing a headache! Which is really useful, so at least we’d know what meds to give him to ease the pain!

But the thing is, when they can actually tell you what they want, it makes it harder for you to pretend you don’t understand them. Or to not give them what they are asking for.

I wanted to go down to open the letterbox (which happens once two weeks… yes, I am that lazy busy), and cos I knew I had a stack of mails and junk flyers to deal with, I asked Jay to stay at home with the maid for a while.

“Where are you going, Mommy?”

“To open the letterbox, baby.”

“Where are you going, Mommy?”

“Just going down for a short while. Get the letters.”

“Where are you going, Mommy?”

“Play with Auntie for a while, ok? I will be right back.”

“Where are you going, Mommy?”

“I’ll be very fast! Will come right up! Just count to 10 and I will be back.”

“1, 2, 3…”

A parent probably coined the word “patience”.

When the Bible talks about “longsuffering”, I imagine this will be one such avenue to hone your character.

Now that he can speak so well, he uses it to communicate all his wants and don’t-wants to the rest of the family, and often before deciding whether or not he does want that thing!

Oh and another killer stunt he pulls?

PLEASE.

Like “I want ice-cream now please Mommy.”

Or “I don’t want to bathe please Mommy.”

Or “I want to go Parkway/beach/playground/Sentosa now please Mommy.”

It’s those doleful eyes of his. And his utter sincerity in articulating each word well. Mommy usually caves in. Haha!

So here I am, with my nose half-falling off…

Just sitting in front of the telly, mindlessly watching drama serials on AXN. Whilst munching on some chopped up gold kiwi. Which just happens to be my favourite-est fruit nowadays. Not those sourish green ones that make your face twitch. I love the gold ones. Double the price, double the sweetness and none of that yucky tanginess.

When I should be hard at work.

I know, you’re dissolving in a puddle of envy.

Muahahahaha…

But really, don’t envy me.

Nah, I’m not just saying that.

Cos the only reason I at home and at lounging around and blogging rather than at the office and blogging, *cough!* I mean, at the office and hard hard HARD at work is cos I am down with the flu.

Oh, horrible flu. And after popping that formidable little yellow antihistamine, I am half way in dreamland now! Who would have known such a knock-out punch would be contained in that small little tinny pill? On good days, my sleep-deprivation means my mental facilities are affected by anything from 10 to 20%. Now, it is probably less than half. Haha!

Being a mommy

IMG_1778

I am blessed.

To be a mommy of such an adorable boy.

Sure there are tiring moments days weeks months moments, but seeing him makes it all worth it. He amuses me with his personality and it is such a relief to be able to hold a conversation with him. Sorta.

He keeps Nic & I sane in the midst of the busyness of life and work… and makes the busyness meaningful.

Mini housewarming

It was pretty long overdue.

Our housewarming, I mean.

And so last Sunday, we decided to get our families together for a small gathering.

All parties need good food, and this time, I catered a nasi lemak buffet from Lee Wee & Brothers.

IMG_1723

And what a spread it was!

IMG_1729

The food was really good, and at an affordable S$4 per pax, it was a cheap yet enjoyable dinner! With three kids and a fussy eater for a sister, nasi lemak seemed to be the safest bet!

After filling our tummies, Jay and his cousins started playing around!

Playgrounds galore!

Marine Parade is a kid’s paradise. From the HDB block I stay in, there are 6 to 7 well-maintained playgrounds within a few blocks’ radius! Enough to tire any kiddo out. And playgrounds never fail to make Jay’s day!

Brought him to the East Coast and after our morning at the beach, we proceeded for a hearty MacDonald’s meal, and to tire him out further, we proceeded to the playground just outside the Mac’s!

Sorry for the totally garish outfit, his earlier clothes were mud-soaked!

IMG_1658

Immediately after the beach, doesn’t he look totally wasted and tired?

You obviously have no idea of how huge a kid’s reservoir of energy is when it comes to playtime.

Seeing the playground, he immediately perked up! Some alien must have whisked away that tired grumpy kid just 20 minutes earlier.

When we reached home, a good two and a half hours at East Coast, he required little coaxing for his nap! Haha!

The thing about baby boys…

… is that they have some strange notion of fun.

I brought Jay to the beach on Sunday, and he had fun with his new sand set!

IMG_1516

Pouring, packing, digging, throwing sand and water all around.

He had on white pants at the beginning.

At the end?

IMG_1629

Absolutely DIRTY!

The reason? He was making chocolate.

IMG_1583

IMG_1587

IMG_1611

Yes, he was scooping sand into the pail of water, turning it into a nice shade of murky brown.

And when his fingers moved too slow, he brought in the big guns.

IMG_1622

Da spade.

My dirty little fella!

It was a beautiful morning at the beach!

Sunny Sunday morning

I am not a beach fan. I know, I’ve lived in the East and a stone’s throw away from the beach most of my life. But I don’t like the beach much. It’s o..k..a..y,… I guess.

But I can’t have a ninny for a son.

So it was for his sake that I dragged us all out to the beach on a sunny Sunday morning. Make that a scorching Sunday morning.

IMG_1508

It was a gorgeous day, and perfect for photo-taking, so let me let the photos do the talking!
